A
very small amount of mercury - on average, less than 3 mg. - is
used in silver oxide and manganese alkaline button-cell batteries
to prevent a gassing process that would otherwise corrode the
battery and the watch or clock that contains it.
Button-cell
batteries should be recycled properly by having a professional
watch technician remove the spent battery from the watch or clock
and forward it to an appropriate waste management service for
recycling. Consumers are cautioned not to remove spent batteries
themselves because special equipment is often needed and any damage
resulting from unauthorized service will normally void the product
warranty.
